Supervising co-ordinator for Advanced Medical Science students undertaking Radiology Studies.
His main interests are in ultrasound and gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary radiology (both diagnostic and interventional). His publications include over 100 papers, several chapters and one textbook in these areas.
Prof Gibson is very actively involved in medical education, most recently in the development of a new radiology undergraduate curriculum for medical students at The University of Melbourne; this curriculum forms the basis of the Medical Imaging CD-ROM currently available through eshowcase. He is a former Chairman of the Education Board of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine and was foundation editor of its journal (ASUM Ultrasound Bulletin). He is also on the editorial boards of several international journals.
Current Research Interests include:
- Ultrasound diagnosis of cirrhosis: evaluation of hepatic vein wall changes as a diagnostic sign
- Percutaneous radiofrequency tumour ablation of inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma: Evaluation of effectiveness and safety
- MRI in evaluation of focal liver disease and biliary obstruction
- CT - Intravenous cholangiography
- Interventional Biliary Radiology - Use of superficially fixed Roux loops in benign and malignant disease
- Radiology teaching at undergraduate level
