Professor Patricia M Desmond
Professor Desmond is the current Edgar Rouse Professor and Head of The University of Melbourne Department of Radiology and Director of the Department of Radiology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Professor Desmond qualified Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Melbourne in 1984, following her obtaining Bachelor and Masters qualification in Physics. She was recognized as the top student in that discipline in the undergraduate years. Her most recent medical qualification is the award of Doctor of Medicine in 2005 studying Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Acute Cerebral Ischaemia. She is a well established neuroradiologist, recognized as a specialist in neuroimaging, a field in which she has published effectively and extensively. She has 72 publications and 2 book chapters, each targeted to discipline-informing journals. In addition Professor Desmond holds a Graduate Certificate in Business Management from Flinders University awarded in 2006.
She has been the radiologist in charge of magnetic resonance imaging at The Royal Melbourne Hospital for over 10 years, managing resources and patient needs whilst providing graduate and undergraduate medical teaching in neurosciepdesmond@unimelb.edu.aunces and in radiology elective programs. Her skills have been recognized by Outstanding Teacher Awards in the Master of Medicine Program at The University of Melbourne. She has been, and is currently, the supervisor of postgraduate students in Doctor of Medicine and PhD studies and is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the Howard Florey Institute. She is a member of the Neuroimaging Platform and the Neuroinformatics Platform of Neurosciences Victoria. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists and supports the discipline as an Examiner of the College, by extensive committee memberships including as Secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Neuroradiology, as Associate Editor of Australasian Radiology and as a reviewer of clinical neuroscience publications and research grants.
Professor Desmond has attracted sustained funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council in clinical neuroscience, acute stroke, schizophrenia and stroke in diabetes and has significant funding from other sources. Included in this is the participation in multicentre funded research in the areas of Huntington’s disease, stroke and glioblastoma.
Professor Desmond’s acumen as an academic and clinical neuroradiologist is peer-recognized and she is frequently sought as a visiting lecturer and in national and international meetings. Amongst these she has been an invited speaker to meetings of the International Psychiatric Association, the International CT/MR Conference, Symposium Neuroradiologicum Paris and the Asian Oceanian Seminars in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.
Professor Desmond has demonstrated distinction and leadership in education, research, clinical medicine and management.
